In 1973 I was employed by Aetna Casualty Insurance Company as a Regional Claims Representative. I had reached the top of the salary schedule for Southeast Missouri and had become somewhat disgruntle with my Claims Manager in St. Louis. As a result, I started looking for other areas of endeavor. The real estate appraisal business raised its ugly head and I decided to take a chance in that field. On the advice of my landlord I contacted the American Institute of Real Estate Appraisers and started investigating that organization. In November of 1973 I attended a meeting of the A.I.R.E.A at the Pierre LaCleade Club in Clayton, Missouri; I was very impressed with the membership of the organization and decided I would like to become a member of such an elite group. I made application for membership, starting taking appraisal courses, doing appraisal work and over a period of time became established. In 1980 I obtained the RM (now SRA) Designation and in 1989 I earned the MAI Designation. Over the years I have enjoyed many benefits of my change in professions. Over the years I have appraised properties from many organizations and have covered about all of the different types of properties that exist in the Southeast Missouri and Southern Illinois area. If I had it all to do all over again I would probably repeat, however with much more trepidation than in 1973.
